George Watson was an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow at the National Humanities Center in 2000-01. He teaches in the Department of English at the University of Aberdeen, where he is also Associate Director of the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies. This article was originally given as a lecture at Princeton University, in March 2001, and was presented to the Life-Writing Issues Discussion Group at the Center, in May 2001.
